Dubai Gold Souk Guide: Hours, How to Get There, Prices, and How to Buy

The Dubai Gold Souk in Al Ras, Deira, is a covered street market of more than 300 jewellery retailers selling 24K, 22K, 21K, and 18K gold at a single daily metal rate, with the Gold Souk Extension of 295 shops and about 150 wholesale offices opened opposite it in April 2022. Shops open from about 10:00 to 22:00, two Green Line Metro stations serve it, and the price of any piece is the day's rate times the weight plus a negotiable making charge plus 5% VAT.

Where the Gold Souk Is and How to Get There

The souk runs along Sikkat Al Khail Street in Al Ras, north of Baniyas Square on the Deira side of Dubai Creek, about 8 to 9 kilometres from Dubai International Airport and about 13 kilometres from Downtown, which is 10 to 20 minutes by taxi from either depending on traffic, and the table lists the transport options with their costs.

Opening Hours and the Best Time to Visit

Hours in the Gold Souk are set shop by shop rather than by a single operator, and the pattern reported by Time Out Dubai and local listings is Saturday to Thursday from 10:00 to 22:00 with many shops closing between 13:00 and 16:00, and Friday from 16:00 to 22:00. Evenings after 18:00 are the busiest and the coolest; late morning is the quietest time to compare prices without pressure. The Dubai Jewellery Group updates its suggested retail rate during the trading day, so a quote taken in the morning and one taken in the evening can differ by the metal move alone, and the daily rate page shows the figure to check a board against.

Today's Gold Rate in the Souk (2026-09-04)

Every shop in the souk displays the same metal rate per gram for the four retail purities, and the table below is the reference figure computed from the international spot price at the 3.6725 dirham peg, which the boards match within rounding on any given day.

Metal value only. The Dubai Jewellery Group, founded in 1996 under Dubai Economy and Tourism, publishes the suggested retail rate the trade uses; making charge and VAT are added per piece.

How Prices Work and Where to Bargain

A Gold Souk price has three parts, and only one of them moves: the metal rate times the weight is fixed across the UAE on a given day, from Abu Dhabi to Sharjah, the 5% VAT applies to the whole jewellery invoice since 1 January 2018, and the making charge is where shops compete and buyers bargain. Khaleej Times quotes sellers putting making charges as low as 4% on large plain pieces, and Gulf News reports that bargaining shoppers aim for 20 to 30% off the charge; handmade and stone-set pieces carry much higher charges. Ask every shop for the same four lines, metal rate, weight, making charge, and VAT, and compare the making charge alone. Old gold is exchanged at the day's metal rate for its weight; the original making charge is never recovered, which is why retailers advertise zero-deduction exchange promotions when prices are high.

Gold Souk Price Calculator

The calculator prices a 22K piece the way a souk receipt must show it: weight times today's metal rate, plus the making charge per gram that you negotiate, plus 5% VAT, so a quote can be reduced to its making charge and compared across shops before buying.

Metal rate: 22K at AED 479.41 per gram. The making charge is the negotiable part; typical Dubai jewellery charges run AED 15 to 60 per gram by design.

Purity, Hallmarks, and Testing Inside the Souk

Gold in the souk is sold in 24K (999), 22K (916), 21K (875), and 18K (750), with purity marks approved by the Dubai Central Laboratory of Dubai Municipality and an invoice that must state the rate per gram, weight, making charge, VAT, and purity, as Gulf News set out in its July 2025 explainer on hallmarking rules. Some shops display the Bareeq certificate, a voluntary Dubai Central Laboratory scheme for good jewellery trading practice that involves at least three inspections a year. A Dubai Municipality and Dubai Jewellery Group testing desk inside the souk has offered purity testing since January 2023 with results in one working day, and Dubai Municipality unveiled a self-service purity kiosk at GITEX in October 2025 with the souk named as the first location. Buy only from shops inside the souk or licensed premises: Dubai Police warned in March 2026 about fake online gold sellers, and the sale of gold from apartments or offices is illegal in Dubai.

The Gold Souk Extension and the Najmat Taiba Ring

Ithra Dubai opened the Gold Souk Extension on 26 April 2022 as the first phase of the Deira Enrichment Project, directly opposite the old souk, with 295 retail units, about 150 wholesale offices, restaurants, and covered parking, and Ithra launched the wider Dubai Gold District branding for the Deira area in January 2026. The landmark of the old souk is Najmat Taiba, a 21K ring weighing 63.856 kilograms including 5.17 kilograms of stones, made in 2000 and displayed at Kanz Jewels; it held the Guinness record for the largest gold ring until an 82.2-kilogram ring made in China took the title in 2016. The Gold and Diamond Park on Sheikh Zayed Road is the purpose-built alternative for diamond and custom work, and the buying guide compares the souk with bullion dealers, and the gold bar page prices bullion by size with a premium calculator.

VAT Refund for Tourists

Non-resident visitors aged 18 and over can reclaim VAT on jewellery bought in the souk through the Planet tourist refund scheme run for the Federal Tax Authority, on invoices of AED 250 or more, with export within 90 days and validation at the airport before departure; the refund is the VAT less 13% and less AED 3.60 per tag, and cash refunds are capped at AED 35,000. Ask the shop to issue the tax-free tag at the time of purchase, because it cannot be added later. Investment gold of 99% purity or higher is zero-rated and carries no VAT, so bars bought in the souk have nothing to reclaim. Indian visitors should check the duty-free allowance and the rupee comparison before buying, and the investing guide covers holding gold rather than wearing it.

Dubai Gold Souk FAQ

What are the Dubai Gold Souk opening hours?

Shops in the Deira Gold Souk typically open Saturday to Thursday from 10:00 to 22:00, with many closing between 13:00 and 16:00, and on Friday from 16:00 to 22:00. Hours are set per shop rather than by the souk, so the afternoon gap varies and holiday and Ramadan hours differ.

How do I get to the Gold Souk by Metro?

Take the Green Line to Al Ras station, about 550 metres and a five to seven minute walk from the souk, or to Gold Souq station (named Palm Deira until 2020), which connects to the Gold Souk Extension by a footbridge over Al Khaleej Road. From Bur Dubai, the RTA abra crossing on route CR1 to Deira Old Souq costs AED 1, runs from 06:00 to midnight, and takes about five minutes.

What is the gold rate in the Gold Souk today?

Every shop in the souk displays the same metal rate: on 2026-09-04 the reference rate is AED 522.85 per gram for 24K, AED 479.41 for 22K, AED 457.95 for 21K, and AED 392.53 for 18K. The Dubai Jewellery Group publishes the suggested retail rate, and shops add a making charge per piece plus 5% VAT.

Can you bargain in the Dubai Gold Souk?

Yes, on the making charge, never on the metal rate. Khaleej Times quotes sellers saying making charges start from as low as 4% on large pieces, and Gulf News reports that shoppers who bargain aim for 20 to 30% off the making charge. Ask for the metal rate, weight, making charge, and VAT as separate lines before agreeing a price.

Is gold from the Dubai Gold Souk genuine?

Purity marks on jewellery sold in Dubai are approved by the Dubai Central Laboratory of Dubai Municipality, the invoice must show rate per gram, weight, making charge, VAT, and purity, and the voluntary Bareeq certificate displayed by some shops signals inspection at least three times a year. A Dubai Municipality and Dubai Jewellery Group testing desk inside the souk has offered purity testing since January 2023, with results in one working day.

Can tourists claim VAT back on Gold Souk purchases?

Non-resident visitors aged 18 and over can reclaim VAT on jewellery through the Planet tourist refund scheme run for the Federal Tax Authority: minimum AED 250 per invoice, export within 90 days, validation at the airport, with 13% of the VAT plus AED 3.60 per tag deducted as a fee. Investment gold of 99% purity or higher is zero-rated and carries no VAT to reclaim.
